The capital city of East Java and the island's second-largest city after Jakarta, Surabaya is your gateway to the historical intrigue of Old Java.
Head to the Jagat Kirana Temple — the second-largest Hindu Temple in East Java.
You'll also explore Kampung Peneleh village, believed to date back to the Singosari Kingdom. Peneleh is home to charming old houses blending colonial and modern architectural styles. It played a pivotal role in Indonesia's Independence movement, as youth activists once gathered and boarded here. Notably, it was the residence of H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto, a key figure in Indonesia's history.
Visit the neo-Gothic Blessed Virgin Mary Church, built in 1899, and the Majapahit Hotel, founded in 1910 as the Hotel Oranje. Check out the Art Deco-style lobby extension, opened in 1936 and relax here over coffee and cake.
A bit of ancient history awaits you at the Joko Dolog Statue. Legend holds that it was erected in 1289 to honor King Kertanegara of the Singosari Dynasty.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars.
