In Sakata City, explore the art, culture, and food scenes that make Japanese culture so fascinating.
The Honma Museum of Art is housed in an old villa originally constructed in the Edo period. The house and its garden were a holiday retreat for the Honma family. A network of winding walking trails surrounds a central pond. Take in the traditional exhibits, the atmosphere that evokes old Japan, and the scenic views.
Next, visit Somaro — one of the best perspectives from which to understand the port city of Sakata and its cultural history. This traditional high-class restaurant operated for more than a century as Somaya before being renovated and rebranded as Somaro in 2000. Here, you will watch a maiko (Geisha) performance.
Finally, visit the Sankyo Soko rice warehouses — a complex built in 1893 to manage and store rice, still in use today.
Notes:
Somaro is a traditional Japanese building with narrow corridors and small interior spaces. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Tour sequence may vary. Bring local currency, as most vendors do not accept US dollars or credit cards. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse. Traffic can be unpredictable; your patience is greatly appreciated if a delay extends the tour duration. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s).
