Join a local resident guide on a hike across the tundra.
You'll follow a recreational trail to historic Gold Dredge #5 — a giant relic of the Nome Gold Rush. Although idle now, the dredge actively dug for gold in the permafrost of northern Alaska until the late 1990s.
Stretch your legs, breathe in the clean, fresh sub-arctic air, and visit with a local as you discover the region's flora, fauna and gold rush history.
Notes:
Terrain includes relatively flat paths and trails. Hike requires walking approximately two miles in total. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Bring bottled water. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wear insect repellent. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here; you are trading breadth of guide experience for authentic interaction.
