Sake rice wine and Nanbu Ironware are famous products from Morioka. You'll learn about both today. Travel two hours from Miyako to Morioka -- the largest city in Iwate Prefecture. Visit the Morioka Hachiman Shrine, established in 1062 to offer prayers for military victory for a powerful clan. The reconstructed shaden shrine is a brilliant vermilion color -- it's quite a sight to behold.
Visit and learn about Japanese sake (rice wine) at the Asabiraki Sake Brewery, established during the Meiji Era, in 1871. Take a short brewery tour and enjoy some sake samples.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
The Iwachu Nanbu Ironware Factory Museum showcases the rather fascinating progression of ironware over its century-plus of operation. Iwachu is one of the best-known and most-respected manufacturers of modern Nanbu ironware. Pick up a piece in the store as a memento if you wish.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Terrain includes 20 steps to access the main hall at the Hachiman Shrine. There is no elevator or ramp at the Asabiraki Sake Brewery. Participants must be able to climb four stories during the short brewery tour.
