A 90-minute coach journey brings you to Yala National Park — one of the oldest and most famous National Parks in Sri Lanka. Yala is located approximately 1½ hours from the port of Hambantota and plays a very important role in conserving the country's flora and fauna.
Set in a stunning landscape of rocky outcroppings and beautiful beaches, Yala is home to a variety of wildlife and birds. Elephants, sloth bear, deer, wild boar and leopard are among the 32 mammal species found here.
At the park entrance, transfer to a 4x4 safari vehicle with a local guide and spend the next three hours driving through a fraction of this 347-square-mile park, appreciating the scenic landscape and the wildlife. You'll stop at the Indian Ocean, where you can stroll along the beach. The 2004 tsunami caused some severe but localized damage here, and this is clearly evident close to the shore, where a memorial stands in memory of those who lost their lives.
After your drive through this wonderful nature reserve, lunch is served at a local hotel, where a naturalist will answer all your questions.
Notes:
Guests who are pregnant or have a back or neck condition are not allowed to participate. Participants must be able to climb a few high steps unassisted to board the transportation. The vehicle is covered but has open sides. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
