Drive eastward, passing through Singaraja -- the former capital city of Bali -- and through Sawan Village where the villagers are traditional makers of gamelan gongs and other gamelan instruments.
You're headed to Ponjok Batu Temple, built on a special site just above a small promontory beaten by the waves. The temple is dedicated to Danghyang Niratha, a Javanese priest who exerted great influence over the Balinese Hindu religion in the 16th century. It is said that he liked to sit on the rocks and pray, meditate and write poetry, and that he was inspired by the energy of the waves below. An ancient sarcophagus was recently found in the area, and it is now displayed in the temple shrine. A statue of a boat and some other shrines can be found on a small rock near by the temple.
Sembiran is one of Bali's oldest traditional villages, located high in the hills of the main coastal road. The winding two-mile road up to Sembiran is extremely steep and takes you over beautiful hills and through serene valleys. The Sembiran villagers traditionally used to wrap their dead in white cloth and laid them out on bamboo platforms. This tradition has now ended but your guide will tell you a few interesting stories associated with this practice.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to the port at Celukan Bawang.
