Holland America Line Simplifies COVID-19 Procedures

Holland America Line is updating its “Travel Well” COVID-19 protocols and procedures, including requirements for vaccinations and pre-cruise testing that meet public health goals while recognizing the evolving nature of the COVID-19 situation. These changes will go into effect for cruises departing on or after Sept. 6, 2022.

Under the simplified procedures, for most voyages up to 15 nights, vaccinated guests will no longer have to test before cruising and unvaccinated guests will be welcomed with a self-test within three days of sailing. The new protocols do not apply to itineraries for countries where local regulations may vary, including Canada, Australia, and Greece.

Key changes for cruises up to 15 nights (Ages 5 and older, not including full Panama Canal transits, trans-ocean and designated remote voyages):

• Vaccinated guests must provide evidence of vaccination status prior to embarkation. Pre-cruise testing is no longer required.
• Unvaccinated guests are welcomed aboard and must provide results of a negative medically supervised or self-test taken within three days of embarkation.

Protocols for cruises 16 nights or longer (plus full Panama Canal transit, trans-ocean and designated remote voyages, ages 5 and older):

• All guests will be required to submit a medically supervised COVID-19 test with written negative result. The test must be taken within three days of embarkation.
• Guests must be vaccinated or request an exemption.

Guests on longer voyages will be provided additional information about protocols based on ports visited. Guests can continue to submit documents electronically ahead of embarkation for a simple and faster check-in process. Holland America Line recommends that guests visit the TravelWell section of the company’s website for updates prior to cruise departure, as well as instructions on how to provide results of a negative test.

Hi Cindy, yes if you are eligible you must have the booster. Up to date means that a guest is fully vaccinated, and received at least 1 booster dose, if eligible before embarkation. Guests are considered “up to date” from the date of receiving their booster dose.

  • Julie

Yes, cruises that include Canada need testing.

  • Julie

Cruises to Mexico roundtrip from San Diego no longer require vaccination, so please call reservations. We apologize for the confusion. And yes, fully vaccinated means at least one booster if you are eligible.

  • Julie

Unfortunately we do not know the answer to that. Please call reservations.

  • Julie

Any cruise that includes Canada requires vaccination and testing.

Hi Edward, for the 5 day you do not need to test. The full-ship charter is different and operated by the charterer. We no longer require testing for our 7-day Caribbean cruises, but perhaps a charter is different. We do not have that information, unfortunately. Please reach out to the operator.

  • Julie

Hi Jack, they are considered separate voyages.

  • Julie

Panama Canal transits have different regulations we need to adhere by.

Hi John, HAL will transfer you to a hotel to isolate (or isolate you on board, depending on the situation). If you go to a hotel and need to fly home, we will arrange your flights for when isolation is over.

We have updated our list of cruises that require extra protocols, so please check it to be 100%.

Hello. I have read that the 21 day Panama Canal cruise out of Seattle (October 8 – voyage D271) has changed the vaccination requirements to now include a Covid-19 booster in addition to the original series of two. Can you comment on this, as this is not what was stated earlier. ArrivCan does not require it on their app.

    Thank you.

  • Julie

Hi Mary, “fully vaccinated” has always included the booster if the guest is eligible for Holland America Line. We apologize if you were give the wrong information.

  • Mary

Thank you Julie. I know this is confusing for everyone involved. However, the website still says as of 9/21/2022 1:33 PM PDT under FAQs and Covid-19 Requirements:

(Updated) Am I still considered fully vaccinated if I did not get a booster shot?
Yes – guests are still considered fully vaccinated with completion of a primary vaccination series at least 14 days before embarkation.

There is another statement about “up to date” that mentions boosters a little further up the page.

Does a Canadian citzen boarding at YVR to FLL on N. Amsterdam still required preboarding Antigen test within 48 hours of sailing? Sailing date is Oct. 2nd.

Today Canada announced removal of all COVID requirements. We are cruising out of Boston on 10/2 with stops in Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottestown and then on to Quebec.

Since Canada is not requiring a COVID test for entry, is HA requiring a test (we are fully vaccinated and boosted)?

Also, are all ports mentioned above open (after the hurricane)?
    Thanks,
    Lynn

san diego to hawaii. January 2023. vacinnated, not boosted. do i still have to test? 3 days? 2 days?

  • Rosilyn Jensen

We are going on the 16 day Panama Canal cruise in January. It says cruise’s 15 day and under do not need a Covid test. We have our 2 shots and a booster right now and plan to get another booster before cruising. Will we have to test prior to boarding. It will be unlikely that we can test as when leaving it’s not available for us to test. Rosilyn Jensen

Hello! As it is a few months away and protocols keep changing, I recommend checking back closer to your cruise.

  • Julie

Hello, at this time yes, you will need a COVID test. You can look into getting one at the port of embarkation at a CVS or Walgreens.

  • Julie

If you are vaccinated, we no longer require a test. All except Charlottetown, which will be replaced with another lovely Canadian port.

  • Julie

If you are vaccinated, then no testing is needed.

  • Julie

As it is a charter, you will need to check with them. They might have different requirements than we do for a regular cruise.

  • Julie

Hi Blossom, you can look at your exact cruise requirements to be sure. But at this time, if you are vaccinated, no testing is needed. If you are not vaccinated, you will need to test. https://book2.hollandamerica.com/protocols/
