Is smoking permitted on Holland America Line cruises?
Answer: For the comfort of all guests, staterooms, lounges, and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. No smoking of any kind will be permitted on any stateroom verandah.
Holland America Line maintains smoke-free staterooms, smoke-free lounges, and smoke-free indoor public spaces across the ship, and smoking of any kind is not allowed on any stateroom Verandah. However, f you do smoke, please use only the posted designated smoking areas. We have a detailed list for most ships below.
Where Can I Smoke?
Designated smoking areas vary by ship and are clearly marked on board.
Noordam, Westerdam, Zuiderdam
- Sea View Bar has a designated smoking area.
- In the Casino smoking is not permitted.
Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Oosterdam, Rotterdam, Volendam, Zaandam
- Sea View Bar has a designated smoking area.
- In the Casino smoking is permitted in designated areas for active players only (when 12nm outside of the Netherlands).
Please note that these rules may shift with local regulations, and Holland America Line reservesreserve the right to adjust onboard smoking locations at any time.
Cigars and pipes
Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed inside the ship, and it is permitted only on outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.
Electronic cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in staterooms or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas.
If you do vape, please follow the same posted boundaries used for smoking zones.
What happens if someone smokes in a stateroom or on a Verandah?
Violating Holland America’s smoking policy can result in a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation, plus the risk of being removed from the ship for repeated violations.
Nobody wants their vacation to include avoidable charges. So, if you need to smoke, step to a designated area, enjoy the fresh ocean air, and return to your day feeling unhurried and at ease.
