Paamiut means "those who reside by the mouth (of the fiord)." Indeed, people have lived here since around 1500 BC — first the Native Kalaallisut people; then, Norse settlers. The modern community was founded on the trade of fur and whale products. It also became known for its soapstone artists. The town has one of the finest churches in Greenland, built in 1909 from wood in the Norwegian style.
Join a local guide for a short orientation to the remote city of Paamiut. Your guided walk through town lasts approximately 90 minutes. You will learn the history of the colonial harbor, the museum area, some protected buildings, the church, culture and institution areas, and the trades and administration area — a great opportunity to get acquainted with the people and lifestyle of Paamiut.
Return to the ship. Guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
There are no inside visits on this tour. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. Tour requires approximately 90 minutes of walking. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here; you are trading breadth of guide experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties or operational surprises that may crop up. All of the sights you'll see on tour are accessible on foot from the tender pier, but your guide offers perspectives that you may not be aware of if you explore on your own.
