Cross the Strait of Magellan to Isla Magdalena and Isla Marta. Together, these islands form the Los Pinguinos National Monument, which protects more than 150,000 penguins as well as a small colony of sea lions.
The islands create an interesting ecosystem — Marta Island is home to more than 1,000 sea lions, along with cormorants, skuas, Austral seagulls, Antarctic pigeons and sea elephants. You can't step ashore on Marta due to local regulations, so you will circumnavigate to admire and photograph both the colony and the diversity of marine birds that live there.
On Magdalena Island, you will go ashore and interact with one of the major colonies of Magellan penguins — more than 150,000 birds — spending an hour walking among the colony.
Notes:
Seasonal migration, which is somewhat unpredictable, can affect the operation of this tour in March and April. The ship will liaise with the tour operator before arrival in Punta Arenas and, if penguins are no longer present, participants will be invited to substitute an alternative shore excursion. The circumnavigation of Marta Island is dependent upon weather and sea conditions. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf.
