In partnership with the History Channel, delve into Tromsø's pivotal role as the "Gateway to the Arctic" and its rich history of polar exploration.
Begin at the Polar Museum, housed in a historic 1830 Customs warehouse at Skansen Pier. Opened in 1978, 50 years after Roald Amundsen's final expedition, the museum highlights Tromsø's significance in Arctic exploration. Learn about legendary explorers like Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen, who relied on Tromsø for skilled crews and ships. Discover exhibitions on Arctic trapping and hunting, and gain insight into the challenges of polar expeditions.
Continue to a husky kennel just outside of Tromsø, where you'll meet the dedicated caretakers of these incredible sled dogs. Learn about their role in Arctic races and expeditions, view the equipment used, and interact with the beautiful huskies, symbols of Arctic endurance.
Notes:
Wear washable clothing for interactions with the dogs. Various husky camps are used depending on availability. In the event that Tromsø Bridge is closed, sites will be accessible using an alternative route that may involve a tunnel. Children under the age of 3 must be secured in a child's car seat on the transportation. These are not available through the tour operator; you must bring your own from home.
