Departing from Stornoway by coach, travel across the moorland that covers the center of the Isle of Lewis and head towards the island of Great Bernera. This island is separated from Lewis by a strait just 400 feet wide. Since 1953, Bernera and Lewis have been connected by a bridge, which you will cross today. Bernera measures just six miles by three miles and was owned by
Count Robin de la Lanne Mirelees — the Prince of Coronata and the Queen's former herald.
You will stop at Bostadh to appreciate some beautiful beaches and spectacular coastal scenery. In 1992, gale-force winds revealed an entire Iron Age settlement here, perched above a precious little bay of golden sand. Visit the excavated remains and a replica of an Iron Age house.
Then, transfer the short distance to Breacleit — the main village on the island. Enjoy a short stop to take photographs.
Returning to the ship at Stornoway, you may catch a glimpse of Carloway Broch to the north.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour does not operate on Sundays. Tour requires walking 200 yards to the house; the doorway is low — you must crouch to enter.
