Unama'ki, or The Land of the Fog, is the traditional Mi'kmaq name for Cape Breton. In addition to Scottish and Acadian, Mi'kmaq culture is part of the fabric of Cape Breton Island. This is your opportunity to learn about one of the oldest civilizations in North America -- one that is steeped in song, story, food, and community.
At the Membertou Heritage Park and Cultural Center, you will experience the teaching of indigenous knowledge, see firsthand a birch bark canoe, wigwam, and Canada's largest Ash basket. A welcome of drums and song will greet you, and will be followed by teaching and insights from community knowledge keepers.
Next you will follow a knowledge keeper along the Heritage Park paths and learn about the local plants and their traditional uses. Savor a sample of Luskinikn (Luski), a traditional quick bread typically topped with butter, jam or molasses, and enjoy a cup of blueberry tea. Discover the history, culture, and lifestyle of the Mi'kmaw, past and present, as you participate in a Dreamcatcher workshop.
From the Heritage Park, you will finish your visit to Membertou with a visit to Kiju's Restaurant at the Convention Centre where you will enjoy a three course Mi'kmaq inspired lunch consisting of a Three Sister Soup, artisan green salad topped with a tasting of salmon, duck, and elk, and a delicious wild blueberry streusel cake for dessert.
After your immersive Mi'maq experience, transfer back to your ship in Sydney.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour requires walking approximately .6 mile (1 km). Terrain includes mostly even surfaces. Shopping for Mi'kmaq products and artisan crafts acna be done at the Petroglyphs Gift Shop at the Membertou Heritage Park and Cultural Center.
