Shurijo Castle Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It shows strong Chinese architectural influence because Okinawa's ancient Ryukyu Kingdom was a vassal state of China. The castle no longer exists — it was obliterated during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, rebuilt and opened to the public in 1992, and burned down again in 2019. The surrounding park offers some excellent photo opportunities — it is home to the Shurei-mon Gate, rebuilt in 1958 and now the symbol of Okinawa. You'll also see the Sonohyan-Utaki-Ishimon Gate — a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visit the Shikinaen Garden, originally built in 1799 for Ryukyu royalty. Manicured paths connect small forests, a central pond and the Rokkaku-do Pavilion, built in a classic Chinese style. The gardens blend Japanese and Chinese architectural styles and flora and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A brief drive along Kokusai Street introduces you to Naha's commercial heart. You'll pass hotels, shops, restaurants and theaters. Enjoy free time to stroll through this area that combines cosmopolitan flavor with genuine folk appeal. You will find souvenirs and other goods for sale in the local stores.
Notes:
Terrain includes steps and unpaved paths. Bring local currency (Japanese yen), as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse. Tour sequence may vary. Tour does not operate on Wednesdays.
