Your skipper is a Kodiak islander with more than 30 years of experience in these waters. His extensive knowledge of local history and the commercial fishing industry here will enhance your experience today. An unstructured itinerary allows Captain Dave to be flexible and choose the locations that best suit your interests and the day's conditions. He steers you through the harbor, where the famous king crab fleet from Deadliest Catch moors for the summer before heading out to the Bering Sea.
You'll also head out to the beautiful bird rookeries nearby, where you can see hundreds or even thousands of kittiwakes and both tufted and horned puffins. These seabirds nest on the sheer, windswept cliffs of the Kodiak archipelago. Look up, and you may see majestic bald eagles nesting in the tops of the Sitka spruce trees.
Passing some smaller islands, watch for historic sites and abundant marine mammals — sea lions, otters and hopefully various whales, including humpback and orcas.
Learn about Kodiak's early Native inhabitants, the days of the Russian colony and the fur trade, and beyond to World War II. The present-day fishing industry is key to the survival of this small community.
