A ferry ride from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen is followed by a motorcoach ride to the ruins at Coba.
Coba is one of the Yucatan Peninsula's most picturesque and famous archeological ruins. Your guide will share the secrets of this mystical place as you explore newly restored structures that have only recently been opened to the public.
Make your way on foot along a pathway flanked by jungle to reach the first excavated ruins. These consist of a large pyramid, Grupo Coba, and a ball court. You'll also see the second-tallest temple in the Mayan world, Nohoc Mul.
Return to the ship with a stop along the way to admire La Iglesia -- the small but lovely ruins of a church that resembles a beehive.
Notes:
Tour involves considerable walking on uneven limestone and loose stones and climbing on uneven, rough surfaces. Wear comfortable walking shoes; bring a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. There is a government tax of US$5-8 on the use of video cameras at the ruins. No tripods and/or professional video cameras are allowed. Visitors cannot climb some of the ruins due to their fragile state. The transportation aspect of the tour is long, with a 30- to 40-minute ferry ride each way, a 90-minute motorcoach drive each way and wait times in between. An additional 20-minute stop en route during the drive allows you to stretch your legs. An optional bike-taxi ride (approximately 1.3 miles) to/from Nohoch Mul is also available. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Plastic bottles are not allowed. If you wish to bring water, please bring it in a reusable container. Guests prone to seasickness and/or motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication.
