Experience the typical Flemish countryside with a scenic drive to the quaint village of Damme. This typical village is steeped in traditional Flemish character. Use your free time here to stroll and explore or to sit down at a café and enjoy one of the many different kinds of beer Belgium produces (at your own expense).
Drive through the outskirts of the historical city of Bruges for a view of the windmills and the impressive medieval city walls, with a chance to buy some Belgian chocolates at one of the largest chocolate shops in the city.
South of Bruges, you will visit the impressive Castle of Loppem. This castle has a homogenous style, in the sense that the architecture and the interior are preserved in their original state with little deviation from the archetypal design. In 1856, Baron Charles van Caloen appointed English architect Edward Welby Pugin to design the castle. Jean Bethune was engaged to add Flemish character, and Loppem Castle later came to play a prominent role in the political history of Belgium at the end of World War I.
Notes:
This excursion does not enter the city walls of Bruges; you will visit the outskirts of the city only. The castle is closed on Sunday and Monday. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, and steps.
