The coastal city of Ålesund, with a population of 41,000, serves as the commercial capital of the Møre og Romsdal District. The city boasts one of Norway's largest fishing harbors, with a rich and lively history behind it, including a devastating fire in 1904 that gave rise to a popular expression of surprise in Norway, "I haven't heard anything like that since Ålesund burned down." The fire left 10,000 people homeless and destroyed the whole city center. Ålesund was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style with building materials from all over Europe. It is now one of the few remaining Art Nouveau towns in the world, and inhabitants and visitors alike value its charming atmosphere and distinctive character.
Travel from the pier through the center of the town with its amazing buildings, fascinating decorations, and colorful façades.
At the Sunnmore Open-Air Folk Museum, view some of the old houses and a collection of boats.
Notes:
Tour requires approximately one hour of walking, as well as periods of standing. Terrain includes steps, steep inclines and uneven surfaces at the Sunnmøre Open-Air Folk Museum. Some of the houses have high thresholds, low doorways and stairs. Some houses are not wheelchair/walker accessible.
