Excavations reveal that the ancient city of Corinth was both vast and wealthy -- a stalwart survivor of numerous sackings but leveled in the end by an earthquake. St Paul lived and worked in Corinth for 18 months, making converts wherever possible. The bema (platform) where the Roman governor tried him is still visible.
See one of Corinth's most striking ancient buildings -- the Temple of Apollo, of whose original columns seven still stand.
Walk through the remains of the marketplace, a colonnaded square once surrounded by many small shops. See the celebrated Fountain of Priene and the Lechaion Road, formerly the main thoroughfare to the port of Lechaion.
Continue along the Argive Plain to visit the site of ancient Mycenae. Although excavations began here in 1841, it wasn't until 33 years later that self-styled archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann unearthed the city's treasures.
Enter the site via a walkway lined by impenetrable cyclopean walls through the Lions Gate, where Clytemestra received her husband, Agamemnon, on his return from Troy. Once inside the gate, explore the Royal Palace, the shaft graves and the remains of the city walls. An archaeological briefing within the Treasury of Atreus, also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon, enhances your understanding of these sites.
