Begin with a pleasant drive to the city that is the essence of Sicily -- Taormina -- built in the 3rd century BC by the Greeks and later completely renovated by the Romans. Perched on a terrace overlooking the sea, it boasts a medieval character that will delight you.
Your guide will introduce you to Taormina's charms on a guided walk that includes the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and the bustling main street of Corso Umberto, which is lined with former mansions, enchanting architecture, and balconies that brim with flowers. You will see the Porta Catania, Porta del Centro, the Clock Tower, and the Porta Messina. From the Piazza IX April terrace, take advantage of some superb photo opportunities and a fine panoramic view over the Gulf of Taormina.
At the 15th-century Palazzo Corvaja, view an excellent example of the characteristic black and white lava and pumice-work of Taormina architecture.
Follow your guide up to the narrow street that leads to Taormina's impressive Greco-Roman theatre, which dates to the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC and still hosts performances today. The theatre's dramatic location presides over an incredible view of the Bay of Naxos and Mt Etna in the distance.
Notes:
Buses are not permitted in the town. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, many steps, and an elevator to climb from the parking area to the town. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
