This condensed four-wheel-drive introduction to Huahine offers an overview of the history and traditions of this French Polynesian jewel. A local guide will drive you around Huahine Iti — the smaller island of the two islands that comprise Huahine. The two islands are separated by only a bridge, which crosses a few hundred yards of crystal-clear water.
Begin with a drive around Maroe Bay and cross to the smaller island. Passing tropical vanilla and melon plantations, you will stop at the gorgeous white-sand beach of Parea Bay for a refreshing drink.
Along the way, you will take in the lush views of the island's lagoons and forests, learning more about the history of the island before exploring one of its 400-year-old sacred stone temples. These are called marae.
Watch for the local flora as your guide points out the various species and inhale the beautiful scent of the fragrant yellow frangipani flower.
Finally, you will stop at a small vanilla plantation — the air heavy with the natural scent of vanilla — to learn more about using the pods and flowers of this magnificent plant.
Return to the ship in beautiful Maroe Bay.
