Together, the island of Newfoundland and the mainland of Labrador make up Canada's easternmost province. The region initially drew settlers because of its abundant cod fisheries. This staple is still a signature of the local cuisine, but today, world-class chefs, distillers and brewers are opening exciting hotspots featuring homegrown culinary delights with some interesting twists.
Stroll through the picturesque village of Quidi Vidi en route to the Quidi Vidi Brewery, where you will sample some authentic Newfoundland ales. As you savor different craft brew flavors, peer over the deck railing and ponder how this incredible inlet is home to many of St John's fisherpeople who brave the cold North Atlantic every day to make their living.
Head underground in the old Newman's Wine Vaults to participate in a port wine tasting — a tradition that dates to 1679.
Your tour culminates at a well-known local pub, where you will participate in a traditional Newfoundland ceremony called a Screech-In. Custom dictates that those who survive the ceremony become honorary Newfoundlanders. Will you qualify? If you are still essentially upright at the end of the induction "formalities," feel free to stay and explore the downtown area on your own with a five-minute walk back to the ship. Non-upright bodies will be delivered discreetly back to the ship with minimal fuss.
Notes:
Minimum age for entry on this tour is 19 (legal drinking age). Tour sequence may vary. Transportation is by local school bus. Tour requires a 350-yard walk each way to and from the brewery. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, and steps with no elevator. There is a total of 1 kilometer of walking on this tour. Transportation will be by school bus, therefore mobility equipment will not be permitted, due to a lack of storage and highway traffic act policy. Not suitable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
