A Heart for Community
Connect with the heart and soul of a vibrant community. Whether you're meeting friendly locals, encountering heirloom cultures, engaging with Native peoples, exploring hidden corners, or discovering beloved eateries, let lasting memories begin with warmth, hospitality, and genuine connection.
Inspired by local expert and Head of Tourism at Tataki Auckland Unlimited Karen Thompson-Smith, this walk through the City of Sails invites you to get acquainted with Auckland and its many nuances. New Zealand’s largest and most cosmopolitan city comes to life through its history, legends, and culinary culture.
Follow your friendly and knowledgeable guide on foot through laneways and precincts to a number of food vendors for delicious samplings of their culinary treasures. You’ll also stroll past peaceful parks and historic areas and see some of Auckland’s most famous buildings. Old theaters and the contemporary 1,076-foot-tall Sky Tower -- the Southern Hemisphere’s 2nd tallest freestanding structure -- make for some stark contrasts.
Along the way, you’ll hear fascinating stories about locations only a local would know and see the bar where sailors exited through a hidden door to avoid meeting up with their captain. Learn how a small lane from the old barracks became one of the most famous streets in the city.
