Today, you'll visit Kinkakuji Temple — a Zen temple in northern Kyoto. The top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf for a totally stunning effect.
Arashiyama, in the far west of Kyoto Prefecture, is tucked along the base of the Arashiyama Mountains. The Togetsukyo Bridge is a well-known central landmark here. Visit Tenryuji Temple — a Zen temple with a beautiful Japanese garden — and Arashiyama's famous bamboo groves found nearby. North of central Arashiyama, the ambience becomes more rural, with several small temples scattered along the base of the wooded mountains.
Enjoy a Shojin-style lunch consisting of vegetarian dishes similar to those served to monks.
