Built around a bustling natural harbor and fringed by high ground and hills, Portree was the setting for Bonnie Prince Charlie's last days in Scotland.
This substantial hike will take you around Portree Bay, hugging the shoreline before heading steeply up the path that encircles Ben Chracaig. As you walk along the narrow road that leads away from Portree Harbour, watch for the Royal Hotel, where Bonnie Prince Charlie bade farewell to Flora MacDonald. In 1746, she famously conveyed the prince "Over the Sea to Skye."
Along the coast, the terrain becomes progressively rougher as you reach the Clan MacNicol Monument. The Chiefs of the Clan lived here for many years until the last chief left in 1830 to settle in Australia. Nonetheless, the adjacent 130 acres of hillside and clifftops were purchased by members of the clan in 1987. Glorious views abound from the pathways, which the clan helps to maintain.
White-tailed eagles nesting on the Isle of Raasay may be spied fishing in the sound, while seals are often seen in the waters close to the shore. The uphill track zigzags steeply, then levels out as you approach Torvaig Farm.
A steep, rocky descent takes you through hazel woodland and back to Portree.
Notes:
Wear sturdy walking or hiking shoes (mandatory). Guests not wearing suitable footwear will not be allowed to participate. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Terrain includes narrow, uneven pathways, steep inclines and many steps. You must stay on the designated path as the ground drops away to the side of the path in places. The walk starts at sea level and reaches an elevation of 330 feet; total ascent is 540 feet. Participants must have a good level of physical fitness for this four-mile walk on rough terrain. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Bring a backpack to stow any layers you shed. Bring bottled water.
