Step into a winter fairytale with a visit to the enchanting Old Town of Lübeck, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Germany's most atmospheric Christmas destinations.
Your journey begins with a comfortable, escorted coach transfer to Lübeck, once known as the Queen of the Hanseatic League. Meet your expert local guide in Lübeck for a leisurely walk through the historic Altstadt (Old Town) set on a picturesque island.
Stroll past the iconic Holstentor, Lübeck's famous medieval gate, and admire the elegant patrician houses, narrow alleyways, and the impressive Lübeck Rathaus (Town Hall). Watch for Buddenbrookhaus — once home to the literature Nobel Prize–winning Mann family.
Continue to magnificent St Mary's Church and step inside to admire its soaring Gothic architecture.
Walk through the neighboring Christmas Market. Dating back to 1648, this traditional market transforms the Old Town into a winter wonderland filled with twinkling lights, handcrafted gifts, and the scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine. It is perhaps best known for showcasing scenes from Grimms' Fairy Tales — twenty lovely stalls lead you on a German literary journey. Your guide will happily recommend seasonal delicacies to try, and you'll enjoy free time to explore the stalls, shop for handcrafted gifts, or take a seat at the renowned Cafè Niederegger to discover world-famous Niederegger marzipan (at your own expense).
The journey back to Kiel signals the end of a truly festive and memorable experience.
Notes:
Travel time to Lübeck is approximately 90 minutes each way. An escort will accompany your coach transfer to/from Lübeck, and your guide will join you in the city. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour requires approximately two hours of walking, participants must be able to keep up with the group.
