Visit the noble city of Bilbão, whose iron ore mines were first discovered by the Romans. This modern city, founded in 1300, is in the throes of a spectacular transformation as urban projects and avant garde architecture (such as the ultra-modern Guggenheim Museum) contrast sharply with Bilbão's old quarter and the city's medieval heart.
In the modern part of Bilbão, you will drive past the Gardens of Albia, the Church of San Vicente and the Palace of Chavarri. But the nucleus of this industrial port city is the Old Town, where the narrow streets are lined with Renaissance, Baroque and Modernist buildings.
Stroll through this area as your guide points out the Cathedral of Santiago, the Gothic Church of San Anton and the Plaza Nueva (New Square).
Visit Castro Urdiales, known to the ancient Romans as Flavisbriga. With the charm of a small fishing village, rich traditions and enticing atmosphere, Castro Urdiales draws many visitors who come to soak in the character of the old houses and rows of balconies.
Walking through the narrow streets, you will see two of the city's most famous landmarks—the Church of Santa Marma (a 13th- to 15th-century example of Cantabria's Gothic architecture), and the castle-lighthouse, visible from all over town.
