From Runavík, you'll drive north through Skálafjord, passing idyllic villages and through the tunnel to the west side of Eysturoy en route to the village of Saksun. The Bridge over the Atlantic, as it is sometimes called, spans the narrow channel of Sundini to connect Eysturoy with the larger island of Streymoy. Because the channel is so narrow, spectacular eddies form at the base of the bridge when the current is running strong with the tide. Approaching the village, you will be delighted with the views revealed by every twist in the road.
Saksun is one of the most distinctive villages in the Faroes, and its ancient farm, Duvugardar, is now a National Heritage Museum. It, and the other outbuildings that comprise the museum, provide an insight into rural life in the Faroes. Below the farm, a round bay once formed a natural harbor, but today, it is unusable due to sand deposits that have made its water very shallow.
Accessible only to small boats at high tide, the bay is nonetheless a very beautiful landmark.
After visiting Saksun, return to Runavík via the mountain road.
