Travel from the pier into Adelaide, passing the central business district as you make your way into the Adelaide Hills.
Winding roads lead past orchards and vineyards to the pretty town of Hahndorf, nestled in the foothills. It was founded by German Lutherans in 1839 and is Australia's oldest surviving German settlement. The main street is shaded by century-old elm trees and features old-fashioned cottages, souvenir shops, craft outlets and galleries. The German flavor of Hahndorf is most apparent in the bakeries that line the bustling main street. Several boutique cellar doors (wine-tasting facilities) have recently opened on the main street, and trendy eateries serve the freshest and best local produce.
Enjoy plenty of free time to explore the shops selling local pottery, jewelry, leather goods, and ironwork, or simply stroll the charming streets.
Purchase lunch (at your own expense) before you head up Mount Lofty to enjoy great views of Adelaide (weather permitting). At 2,100 feet above sea level, the summit offers dramatic views of the city sprawling below and the breathtaking South Australia coast.
Notes:
Please note that Hahndorf features some uneven terrain, including uneven footpaths and surfaces. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is recommended. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Tour sequence may vary.
