Explore a lost mining town, hidden in plain sight. When most people think of Alaska's gold rush, Klondike comes to mind, but Treadwell was home to the largest gold mining operation in North America, and its mines, booming decades earlier, produced more gold and employed more workers than the Klondike. What happened here that altered the course of history and forever changed the landscape? Follow scenic walking trails through this mysterious ghost town and its century-old industrial footprint to find out.
Walk with your guide to discover well-preserved ruins lurking silently among the trees, largely unvisited and unexplained, and yet the guardians of so many secrets.
Among the original streets of Treadwell, towering ruins, old mine shafts, building foundations, steel gears, and collapsed buildings remain in place. And while the forest has grown up around them, they still have a story to tell, and they want you to hear it.
Carefully placed immersive media (Augmented Reality) brings select scenes from the early 1900s to life with full-scale, historically accurate visuals to unravel, explain, and draw you into the moment. Key events of Treadwell's history come to life right where they happened, including a representation of the night when 80 miles of mine tunnel collapsed, and large parts of the town collapsed into the ocean. The Treadwell Mine Collapse of 1917 brought the town and the g Klondike Gold Rush era to its end. Step up to the edge of the devastating cave-in and allow yourself to experience firsthand the dramatic, intriguing, and seldom-seen epic saga of Treadwell.
