Travel to the northern village of Arucas, skirting the vast Atlantic Ocean, miles of beach, oceanfront villages, and the Montaña de Arucas volcano.
You'll have an hour to explore the Duchess of Arucas Botanical Garden, established in 1880. This is a romantic and serene five-acre setting with 2,500 tropical plants, huge dragon trees, and inquisitive peacocks roaming about.
Take photos of the Cathedral of Arucas — an imposing neo-Gothic style church made of volcanic stone and sporting some very nice stained-glass windows.
Next, journey to the charming town of Teror to visit the Basilica de la Virgen del Piño (Madonna of the Pine). Located on the main plaza, the neo-Classical church you see today is the third to be built on the same spot since the 15th century. Outside, ten gargoyles stand guard; inside, the main features are the vast Baroque altar and the richly clothed, wooden-carved figure of the Virgin Mary. According to legend, in 1481, a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared in a pine tree to local shepherds; since that time, the Basilica has played a significant role in the community.
Return to the ship by the same scenic route.
Notes:
The route is winding. Guests who are prone to motion sickness or vertigo should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. Tour requires considerable walking and standing. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Bring a light jacket. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The church in Teror is closed on Mondays; an outside visit will be substituted.
