Dublin is the capital of the Irish Republic and is home to more than 1.25 million people — one-third of the population of the Republic of Ireland. In addition to its splendid public buildings, Dublin is particularly rich in domestic architecture dating back to the 18th century. Fine Georgian mansions, many of them with historical associations, lend a sober beauty to the city's wide streets and spacious squares.
Departing from the pier in the harbor town of Dún Laoghaire, you'll head to the heart of bustling Dublin City, 45 minutes away.
On a panoramic city drive, you will soon spot the National Gallery of Ireland and various government buildings. Stop to photograph the world-famous Doorways of Dublin in Fitzwilliam Square. Pass Dublin Castle, City Hall and Christchurch Cathedral.
Travel past the Guinness Brewery — home of the famous Black Stuff — to Phoenix Park.
Around Europe's largest enclosed public park, you'll see the homes of Ireland's President and the American Ambassador.
Driving back along the North Bank of the River Liffey, you will pass the Four Courts of Justice and the Customs House. The latter was designed by James Gandon and completed in 1791.
Crossing the Liffey to Dublin's south side, you will pass the Old Parliament House — now the Bank of Ireland. Watch for Trinity College. Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, it is Ireland's oldest college. Its library houses the world-famous Book of Kells — a hand-illuminated manuscript of the Gospels.
Following this introduction to Dublin City, you will return to Dún Laoghaire and the ship.
