Visit two enchanting castles set amid splendid Italian-style gardens and sample the local wine.
Perched on a rock high above the Gulf of Trieste, Duino Castle was the private residence of the Princes della Torre e Tasso Duino. It is, without a doubt, among the most attractive castles in Europe. A 16th-century tower dominates the castle. Explore this beautiful castle with your guide and admire the memorabilia collected over the centuries. From the clifftop location, the gardens overlook a small fishing village and out to sea. Romantic avenues of trees are embellished with period statues and panoramic terraces.
Continue to Spessa Castle, dating back to AD 1200 and majestically dominating the hills of Capriva del Friuli in Gorizia. This castle was previously the residence of the noble lords of Friuli, hosting famous historical characters such as Giacomo Casanova, who stayed here in 1773. An area of the castle is dedicated to the Venetian’s stay, exhibiting objects and written texts of that period.
Since the 14th century, Spessa Castle has been producing top-quality wines that are often mentioned in leading international wine guides. You’ll visit the prestigious wine cellar to taste red and white wines in a sublime setting. There will be time to visit the wine shop before rejoining your coach.
