On this vineyard-hop through the Croatian countryside, you'll visit some of the region's top wineries and see one that is particularly unique, where the wine is aged in the sea.
A short ferry ride brings you to the Peljesac Peninsula on Croatia's mainland. Once ashore, you'll drive past the beautiful vineyards and many small villages that dot the Peljesac region, as your guide explains the way of life that, in many ways, has changed little in a millennium.
You'll visit the Edivo Winery in Drace -- Croatia's first underwater winery. According to Food & Wine magazine, Edivo's wines are aged for three months, and then stored underwater. The wine is protected by a cork surrounded by two layers of rubber to prevent seawater from entering. The owners claim that the ocean naturally cools the wine and the underwater silence actually improves the wine's quality. The judges seem to agree -- the wine aged in the cellar received a silver medal, but the wine aged in the sea received a gold medal for two years running at the Wine Fest Sabatina competition. This wine is called Navis Mysterium, meaning Secrets of the Sea. Today you will taste three wines -- wine aged in the cellar, the wine aged in bottles in the sea, and wine aged in large containers in the sea. Taste the essence of the Adriatic in the exquisite Plavac wine from Janjina, see pottery that is baked in Petrinja, stands made of wrought iron from Sisak, pinewood boxes made in Varazdin, and local glass and cork -- everything at the winery is purely Croatian.
Enjoy a panoramic drive back to Orebic, stopping at Korta Katarina Winery. Perched on the edge of one of the most stunning coastlines in the world the facility offers award-winning Dingac, Postup and Cara varietals.
