Two thousand years ago, Olympia was the birthplace of a sporting tradition that, millennia later, has found its renaissance in the modern Olympics. The very first Olympic Games were held right here, and as you visit Olympia today, you can almost hear the roar of the spectators, cheering on the athletes as they took their marks on the marble starting blocks. Temples, treasuries, porticoes and statues all stood here, including the Temple of Zeus with its 40-foot-tall statue of the god. The statue of Zeus at Olympia was one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World.
Today, you will see the ruins in a most extraordinary fashion with the aid of Augmented Reality (AR) software. Augmented Reality combines the camera's content with a virtual world — a blend of real-time video and various virtual elements. AR essentially enables you to simply point the tablet's camera at the various locations on site and view them in their original form, as they once stood thousands of years ago. It is an amazing way to view the Olympia as both the ruins of today and the intact buildings of yesteryear.
You will stop briefly in Olympia village before returning to the port.
