Puerto Plata's historical importance derives from its role in the first decade following the European discovery of the Americas.
Departing from the pier, you will pass some of the most important landmarks of Puerto Plata. Disembarking your transportation in the Old Town, you will be able to take note of the vividly colorful colonial structures, including Kite Street, a place bursting with colorful stalls, and the photogenic shopfronts of the Pink Alley.
You will see the San Felipe Cathedral and Plaza Independencia (the former central park).
On a panoramic drive along the malecón (waterfront), take advantage of a quick photo stop at a local beach and at the San Felipe Fortress built in 1564 to protect the city from pirate activity.
Your guide will tell you a little of the fort's long and tumultuous history as you return to the pier.
