Explore beautiful Russell, one of the earliest Maori settlements in New Zealand and, indeed, the country's first capital.
The stories of early Maori and European settlers begin here. Learn of Polynesian, British, French, Australian, and American involvement in the Bay of Islands -- tales of exploration, trading, commerce, conflict, whaling, and game fishing -- as you meander through the picturesque landscape.
A refreshing light snack is served at Russell's Swordfish Club -- the second-oldest game-fishing club in the world.
Afterward, walk along The Strand to a significant Maori Reserve and the Kororareka Marae (meeting place). See Christ Church and its cemetery-- the oldest church in New Zealand -- and explore the Russell Museum.
Guests will have the option to either explore Russell at their own pace on a self-guided walk (maps available from staff upon request) or enjoy admission to the Russell Museum.
Your guide will advise you on the last return ferry to Paihia (Waitangi) and provide your ferry ticket, allowing you to return at your leisure.
