Once an old spice center for eastern and western traders, Malacca boasts a colorful history forged by Malay Sultans, European powers and the formation of multi-cultural communities. Each of these impressive historical eras left its own indelible heritage and influence. Walk back through time as you discover the great empires of Malaccathe Malay Sultanate, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. Stopping at Dutch Square, youll see the Stadthuys, built as the official residence for the Dutch governors and their officersan excellent example of Dutch period architecture. Christ Church, standing tall since 1753, is another contribution of the Dutch who defeated the Portuguese in 1641. You will visit the Governors Museum. as you walk up to St Paul's Hill you will see the ruins of St Paul's Church, where missionary St Francis Xavier was briefly interred in 1553. See the Portuguese Fortress as you descend the hill and view the replica of the Malacca Sultan's Palace, built with great detail and refinement. Finally, you'll head back to the pier by rickshaw.
