Head out for a scenic motorcoach drive across the island to two of the loveliest fishing villages on Bornholm. Along the way, your knowledgeable local guide will tell you about this very special corner of Denmark and the ways of those living here. As you cross the center of Bornholm, you will see gently rolling fields dotted with colorful farmsteads and quaint villages.
Gudhjem is perhaps the most scenic of all the fishing villages. Its name means the Home of Gods, and this quaint village of only 780 permanent residents clings to the side of a rocky bay on the northeastern side of the island. Fishing and whaling were once the main sources of income, and Gudhejm was the first place in Bornholm to start smoking and exporting herrings — the signature delicacy of the island. Enjoy free time here to walk among the half-timbered houses bedecked in bright colors, step inside the many artisan galleries and old-fashioned shops, or enjoy a smoked herring at one of the smokehouses (at your own expense).
Follow the scenic coastal road to Svaneke — another lovely fishing village on the east coast. It was founded in 1555 and is the smallest merchant town in Denmark, with a population of only about 1,100. Wealthy merchants built the large trading posts still found in the village today and expanded the harbor. Use your free time here to walk about and enjoy the quaint village with its many shopping opportunities. Hungry? Excellent! The local chocolatier, brew house, licorice shop, fudge maker and bonbon hut can all be persuaded to part with the perfect remedy.
The route back to Rønne takes you through the Almindingen Forest area, planted in the 1800s to compensate for the extensive logging at the time, which had made the island all but barren.
