To reach Lake Tekapo, a glacial blue gem in the heart of the South Island, travel by coach through the varied farmland.
Wander through the rural town of Fairlie, famous for its award-winning meat pies. Pause at Burkes Pass — a quirky location selling outdoor wooden furniture and metal sculptures.
In the famed Mackenzie Country, named after a sheep rustler from the 1800s, a large glacial blue lake opens out in front of you. This is Lake Tekapo, whose iconic church is built on the lake edge.
Nearby, a statue of a sheepdog commemorates the role the dogs play in high-country farming.
Enjoy lunch with a great view of this stunning blue lake, with time afterward to walk the easy trail to the lakeshore.
