Cruise Prize Takes a Romantic Turn as Holland America Line Hosts Engagement at Sea

What began as a sales incentive became a defining moment in the life of U.K. based travel advisor Dan Hammond and his future wife Mary. Dan won a Caribbean cruise from Holland America following a drawing of eligible travel advisors. Hammond, a specialist with GoCruise & Travel with Tony & Dan, realized Nieuw Statendam was the perfect place to propose to his partner Mary.

With permission from the Captain and discreet coordination by the onboard team, Hammond was granted access to the ship’s bow following a day at Relax Away, Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas. Standing at the front of the ship with uninterrupted ocean views ahead, Hammond proposed in a private moment designed to mark what he described as “the next chapter” of their lives. As Mary accepted, the Captain sounded the ship’s horn—an emotional and symbolic gesture that sealed the moment.

Hammond won a sailing as part of a Holland America Line incentive in September, which rewarded agents making any Holland America Line booking with an entry into a prize drawing. The prize was a seven‑day Caribbean cruise in a verandah stateroom for two aboard Nieuw Statendam, departing 28 February 2026.

Hammond, a lifelong cruiser who took his first voyage at just 18 months old, says proposing at sea felt entirely natural. “Cruising has always been a huge part of my life, so being able to share this moment onboard—and with such incredible support from the crew—made it even more meaningful,” he said. “It was an incredible, emotional moment, made even more special by the warmth and support of the crew who helped bring it all together. Cruising has always been such a huge part of my life, so being able to share these moments with Mary makes it even more special. Proposing at sea felt completely natural — it brings together my lifelong passion for cruising and the next chapter of our lives together."
