This, without question, is one of the world's great cities. Liverpool stretches along the east bank of River Mersey and rising above it all are its two great cathedrals.
Begin your tour with a panoramic drive, watching for the notable buildings of the Walker Art Gallery and St George's Hall. You will pass the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, whose giant wigwam design is splendidly photogenic. This unusual cathedral is topped by a spiked lantern tower containing 25,000 pieces of stained glass. Passing through Chinatown, you will pause for photos at the Anglican cathedral. Built in Gothic style from red sandstone, it is the largest cathedral in Britain. Its foundation stone was laid in 1904, but the cathedral was not completed until 1978.
Next, you'll drive to Port Sunlight, located 30 minutes away on the Wirral Peninsula. This picturesque village is a conservation area and is a living tribute to the man who pioneered a fair deal for the working class.
In Port Sunlight, you'll visit the Lady Lever Art Gallery -- a magnificent gallery in the center of the village and the jewel in Liverpool's crown of museums and galleries. It is filled with treasures from Viscount Lever's remarkable collection of British paintings, furniture and pottery, Chinese ceramics, classical antiquities and Napoleonic artifacts. Since it opened in 1922, the facility has gained international renown. Works by Georgian and Victorian artists such as Reynolds, Gainsborough, Turner, Constable, the Pre-Raphaelites, Leighton and Sargent are on display, and the Wedgwood collection of jasper and black basalt is quite famous. Don't miss the Napoleon Room with a plaster death mask of the Little Emperor before you reboard the coach and head back to Liverpool.

The stop at the Anglican Cathedral offers an outside view only. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The Lady Lever Art Gallery is closed on Mondays; free time in Port Sunlight will be substituted.
