Experience some of Hawai?i Island's most iconic natural attractions on this full-day small-group adventure. Travel along the scenic Hamakua Coast, through lush tropical landscapes and rainforest, on your way to spectacular Akaka Falls, where a short walk leads to views of the island's tallest waterfall plunging 440 feet into a verdant gorge.
Next, stop at Rainbow Falls, an 80-foot cascade located just outside downtown Hilo. Learn about the legends surrounding this famous waterfall and enjoy time for photos from the viewing area.
Continue to Hawai?i Volcanoes National Park, where your guide will introduce you to the fascinating volcanic forces that continue to shape the island. Visit the Kilauea Visitor Center to view exhibits about the park's geology, history, and wildlife before exploring some of the park's most notable features. See active volcanic landscapes, steaming volcanic vents, sulfur banks, and the Thurston Lava Tube, a massive tunnel formed by flowing lava.
After exploring the national park, finish up your Big Island exploration with a brief stop for shopping on Banyan Drive, then relax on the drive back to Hilo.
Notes:
Terrain includes stairs to view Akaka Falls. While this is not a hiking tour, please be aware that the longest nature walk is about a half mile each way. Guests with a heart condition are not allowed to participate. Minimum age is 5 years. Children 9 years and under require a car seat, per Hawaii state law; the tour operator can supply a child safety or booster seat at no charge with advance notice to the Shore Excursions team on board. Wear sturdy, closed-toe (mandatory) walking shoes. .
Note (2025–2026): Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has recently begun a multi-year construction program to repair, improve or remove damaged buildings and infrastructure at the summit of Kilauea. A temporary Visitor Center is open during the construction project; you may encounter delays along the way. If any areas are inaccessible or closed, additional time at other locations within the park will be substituted. Kilauea is an active volcano and erupts frequently; participate at your own risk. Minimum age is 5 years.
