Your small-group adventure begins with a scenic drive along the picturesque Onomea Bay Scenic Drive, where tropical vegetation and sweeping coastal views set the stage for the day ahead. Arrive at Akaka Falls State Park and follow a rainforest trail through a lush landscape of giant ferns, bamboo, and tropical plants. At the end of the trail, marvel at Akaka Falls, where water plunges an impressive 442 feet into a verdant gorge below.
Continue to Rainbow Falls, one of Hilo's most beloved natural attractions. Here, the Wailuku River cascades 80 feet over a lava cave into a beautiful pool below. On sunny days, colorful rainbows often appear in the mist, creating a spectacular photo opportunity.
Next, travel south to Hawai?i Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most fascinating volcanic landscapes. Accompanied by your ranger-trained guide, visit the Kilauea Visitor Center to learn about the island's volcanic history, active eruptions, and unique ecosystem. Explore highlights throughout the park, including volcanic craters, steam vents, and sulfur banks while gaining insight into the powerful geological forces that continue to create and transform the Hawaiian Islands.
Before returning to the ship, enjoy a brief stop in downtown Hilo, where you'll have time to browse local shops featuring Kona coffee, macadamia nuts, Hawaiian treats, island-made crafts, and souvenirs.

Important Notes: This excursion includes walking on forest trails, uneven terrain, paved and unpaved pathways, inclines, and stairs. Guests should be in good physical condition and able to walk independently over uneven surfaces. This tour is not recommended for guests with mobility limitations or those using wheelchairs, scooters, or walkers. Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes (mandatory), sun protection, and weather-appropriate clothing are strongly recommended. Guests with a heart condition are not allowed to participate. Minimum age is 5 years. Children 9 years and under require a car seat, per Hawaii state law; the tour operator can supply a child safety or booster seat at no charge with advance notice to the Shore Excursions team on board.
Note (2025–2026): Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has recently begun a multi-year construction program to repair, improve or remove damaged buildings and infrastructure at the summit of Kilauea. A temporary Visitor Center is open during the construction project; you may encounter delays along the way. If any areas are inaccessible or closed, additional time at other locations within the park will be substituted. Kilauea is an active volcano and erupts frequently; participate at your own risk
