This exclusive guided walking tour brings to life a glimpse of being a prisoner at the Port Arthur penal colony in the 1800s. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
An experiment in punishment and reform, Port Arthur was purposely designed to change those imprisoned here. Through the buildings left behind, you will hear how convicts were made to work, building the prison walls around them, and how they were rewarded. The rules were extensive, and the punishments severe.
On the other side of the bars, you will gain insights into the lives of military officers and the Commandant charged with keeping order in this remote and desolate place.
Notes:
Tour requires approximately 1.25 miles of walking at a moderate pace. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, gravel, grass, and steps. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability before booking. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
