Visit one of Rio’s and the world’s most recognizable landmarks -- the statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain. Creating a postcard-perfect scene, the statue was designed by French sculptor Paul Landoviski. It was shipped to Brazil in 1926 and assembled by local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and his team. The statue and the park surrounding it opened in 1931.
Today, you’ll travel by coach to Largo do Machado; then, switch to a sightseeing van for the 35-minute drive (traffic conditions permitting) to the Paineiras Visitor Center partway up the mountain. This space hosts a permanent exhibition and boasts a gastronomic area with city views and a souvenir store.
From here, a five-minute van ride takes you to the top of Corcovado Mountain and the base of the statue. Your guide will point out the various parts of Rio from a bird’s-eye perspective and will talk about the history behind the statue’s construction and what it means to the Brazilian people.
Descend by van to Paineiras and the bottom of the mountain before reboarding the coach back to the pier.
