Experience the culture and traditions of rural Senegal during a full-day journey to Joal-Fadiouth, followed by lunch and relaxation at a beachfront resort in Saly.
Depart the pier aboard an air-conditioned coach for the approximately two-hour drive to Joal-Fadiouth. Along the way, travel through the baobab-filled landscape of Sindia before arriving at this traditional Serer community.
Visit Joal-Fadiouth, and board a local dugout canoe to explore the area's distinctive shell island. See the shell-covered cemetery, where Christian and Muslim graves can be found side by side, as well as traditional granaries built on stilts above the water. You'll also have an opportunity to learn more about daily life in the community through interactions with local residents, including the Council of Elders and women involved in traditional fish drying and smoking.
After your visit, reboard your coach for the approximately one-hour drive to Saly, where you'll arrive at the Lamantin Beach Resort.
Spend approximately two hours at the resort, beginning with lunch in a relaxing beachfront setting. After your meal, enjoy some free time to unwind and take advantage of the resort surroundings, with the opportunity to use the swimming pool.
Following your time at the resort, reboard your coach for the approximately 1-hour-and-45-minute drive back to the pier..
Notes:
Guests should be comfortable boarding and exiting a local dugout canoe and walking through the village environment.Transportation is basic compared to the transportation you will find elsewhere. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up.
