Depart Piraeus and enjoy a panoramic drive through the city of Athens. Watch for the Corinthian-style Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian's Arch. The latter once divided the Greek city from Hadrian's new Roman city. Pass the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and hopefully catch a glimpse of the Evzone Guards in their colorful National uniform. See the University, the National Academy, and the library — impressive buildings constructed during the neo-Classical period — and the Panathenaic Stadium, built in 1896 for the first modern Olympic Games (photo stop, traffic permitting).
Visit the breathtaking Acropolis — the ancient upper city of temples that boasts many instantly recognizable structures and traces of buildings from various periods dating back as far as the Mycenean era of the second millennium BC. The principal buildings of the Acropolis are the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheum, and the Parthenon from the 5th century BC.
Your visit to the Acropolis is aided and enhanced by using Virtual Reality goggles. You simply put on a pair of VR goggles to immerse yourself in a different world by viewing the surrounding architecture as it stood thousands of years ago when it was newly built. This is a truly remarkable experience, and no description can entirely do it justice.
Enjoy some free time on the Acropolis; then, meet up with your coach and guide at a prearranged time and place to return to the ship at Piraeus.
Notes:
Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Tour requires considerable walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, steep inclines, gravel, grass, and many steps. The marble steps are slippery, especially when it rains. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Expect dense crowding at the site. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
