Today, you're off to Maui's North Shore for an adventure in paradise.
On the Hana Coast Highway, you'll marvel at the hidden splendor of Honomanu and Nuaailua bays and see the seasonally fruit-laden trees — mangoes, java plums, and avocados — of the Ko'olau Forest Reserve.
At Kaumahina State Wayside Park (Kaumahina means "moonrise"), you'll enjoy great views of the rugged coastline and the Ke'anae Peninsula. This portion of the Hana Highway passes lava pinnacles, taro patches, an old Hawaiian village, and a church built in 1860. A stop here provides a pastry snack along with water, canned Island Fruit Juices, and canned iced cappuccinos, as well as fantastic views and an opportunity to listen to the expert commentary of your knowledgeable guide.
Let the surf tickle your toes on the black-sand beach at Wai'anapanapa State Park. The rugged volcanic coastline here offers solitude from urban life. It provides one-stop natural attractions, including native hala, a lava tube, a natural stone arch, sea stacks, blowholes, and perhaps a glimpse of some seabirds.
You'll be in Hana at midday — just in time for an alfresco picnic lunch. Hana Beach Park is the setting for entrees of both a fresh wrap of grilled herb-marinated chicken breast and a fresh wrap of lightly blackened seven-spice seared ono (fish) in a Maui-made tortilla wrap, or a vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free wrap. Included are salads, Maui Gold pineapple, and a triple chocolate fudge brownie with toasted Hamakua macadamia nuts.
Capture great photos and take a swim in a freshwater pool under a cascading waterfall at Pua'a Ka'a State Park (weather and stream conditions permitting).
The afternoon return journey takes you via Ho'okipa for a view of Maui's world-class windsurfers at play.
