Leaving Cairns, you'll cross the Barron River by motorcoach and ascend the lush, forested slopes of the Kuranda Range.
Kuranda village, in the heart of the rainforest, is a fantastic place to enjoy some free time browsing in the shops and markets. Beautifully handcrafted goods and Aboriginal artifacts are sold here.
You'll board the Kuranda Scenic Railway for a ride to Freshwater Station. The railway was built between 1886 and 1891 to connect the port city of Cairns with the North Queensland goldfields. It's a spectacular downhill journey through the Kuranda Mountains, with magnificent views of Australia's UNESCO World Heritage Site rainforest, steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls. Your train ride crosses no fewer than 37 bridges and travels through 15 tunnels. Don't miss the views of Cairns, the surrounding cane fields, and the Coral Sea. At Barron Falls, check out the spectacular views of the falls cascading 800 feet down through the Kuranda rainforest.
A drive from Freshwater returns you to the ship at Cairns.
Notes: The train is equipped with bench-style seating and is not air-conditioned. Bring cash or credit cards for additional purchases. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring a hat and wear biodegradable sunscreen. Guests with visual and/or hearing impairments or travelling in a wheelchair must travel with a companion at all times throughout the tour. Tour sequence may vary. The Kuranda markets do not operate on Mondays and Tuesdays.
