Yahiko Shrine, at the foot of the sacred 2,093-foot Mt Yahiko, is said to be the shrine of the god Amanokaguyama-no-Mikoto. Fishing, rice cultivation, salt production and the other basics of farming were his gift to the area residents, and he contributed to the building of the nation. The shrine's current buildings date back to 1916 and are registered as National Tangible Cultural Assets.
The Shirone Kite Museum exhibits both the lore and history of the giant kite battles of Shirone and the kites from the local regions of Japan. It showcases kites from Japan and from overseas. Learn about the science and history behind kite-flying in Japan -- many colorful kites are on display, with traditional designs and contemporary patterns, including some 3D kites.
